Inner Mongolia
内蒙古
The Last Nomadic Civilisation
The grasslands of Xilin Gol are three hours by air from Beijing, and a world away from everything. The Mongolian steppe at its finest — rolling hills, an unbroken sky, the smell of grass and wind — is one of the few landscapes in China that still operates on geological time. The herding families who have lived here for generations are not a tourist attraction. They are people with a culture, a calendar, and a way of reading the land that has no equivalent in the modern world.
The OttOLux approach to Inner Mongolia is not the packaged ger camp experience sold to domestic tourists. It is a private two-night stay with a working herder family in the Xilin Gol grasslands — witnessing the morning and evening milk ritual, riding with the family to move the herd, eating by firelight. This is one of the most authentically human travel experiences available anywhere.
Hulunbuir, in the far northeast, is a different register entirely — wetter, greener, closer to the taiga. The combination of both regions in a single itinerary, flying in and out of different cities, is the way serious travelers approach Inner Mongolia.
