Fjords, Glaciers & World-Class Lodges

New Zealand does not ask you to observe it. It asks you to enter it. Milford Sound — technically a fjord, carved by glaciers and walled by cliffs that drop 1,200 metres into black water — is best experienced by private charter boat at dawn, when the tourist vessels are still docked and the waterfalls are catching the first light. The Franz Josef Glacier descent by helicopter, landing on the ice, is a 45-minute experience that resets your sense of what the planet is capable of.

The lodge culture in New Zealand is exceptional. Blanket Bay on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Matakauri Lodge overlooking Queenstown. Hapuku Lodge in the Kaikōura valley with its giant tree houses. These are not hotels — they are retreats built for people who understand that the landscape outside the window is the point, and that the building should do nothing to compete with it.

Cape Kidnappers, designed by Tom Doak and consistently ranked among the world's top ten courses, plays along the clifftops above Hawke's Bay. The approach to the 6th tee — where the fairway narrows to a ridge with a 150-metre drop on both sides — is golf's most terrifying and most beautiful par four.
